After “lots of requests to come to Derby,” Dan Day and his father, Doug, will open a Dunkin’ there in March.
“This should be the first Next Generation Dunkin . . . in Kansas,” Dan Day says.
The restaurant will be in a freestanding new building next to Fidelity Bank on Rock Road south of Patriot.
The new store model has a new doughnut display case, “which looks fantastic,” Dan Day says, and a new way of serving iced coffee out of taps that look the same as beer taps.
“It’s kind of the same thing except with iced coffee,” Day says.
He says a combination of great traffic and being in a growth area made the site attractive.
“Dunkin’s got a good spot,” says Derby city manager Kathy Sexton.
She says there’s a lot of commuter traffic that passes through that area.
Although Derby already has a number of coffee shops, Sexton says she thinks there’s room for one more.
“Dunkin’ has a variety of products,” she says.
The restaurant, which will be open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, will sell doughnuts, of course, along with breakfast sandwiches, croissants, bagels, tortilla wraps and what Day calls “amazing coffees.”
The Days own the Dunkin’ territory from Wichita up to Salina and west to Colorado. They plan 11 total, with probably four more in the Wichita area.
“We’re looking lots of places around town,” Dan Day says.

Grant Glasgow of NAI Martens. says Derby continues to be a fast-growing area.
“Derby’s kind of amazing,” he says.
Glasgow handled the deal with NAI Martens colleague Troy Farha and Landmark Commercial Real Estate president Brad Saville.
“It’s really gratifying to see local business people . . . investing and bringing these national brands to Derby,” Sexton says.
She says she always stops at Dunkin’ for a vanilla chai latte when traveling the Turnpike.
“Ooh, man. Changed my life.”
