Spencer’s, a mall staple, will open in NewMarket Square

Spencer’s, the retail specialty gift store known for being a staple in malls across America, will open a third Wichita location at NewMarket Square.

The Spencer’s will be in the small storefront between Versona and Best Buy, the space that had previously been occupied by White Dress bridal shop until it closed in May 2019.

Lisa Barr, a company spokesperson, confirmed that the NewMarket Square location is targeted to open in late September, and said that Spencer’s will keep its store in Towne West Square, which is about seven miles away. There’s also a Spencer’s store inside Towne East Square.

Asked whether an outdoor shopping center is a change in direction for the Spencer’s brand, Barr said in an email, “Spencer’s is a privately held company and does not discuss store opening strategy. With that said, we keep our customers and their shopping convenience top of mind.”

Spencer’s is a subsidiary of the New Jersey-based Spencer Spirit Holdings, Inc., a lifestyle retail company that operates two national brands, Spencer’s and Spirit Halloween, throughout the United States, Canada and online.

The Spencer’s brand is known for its edgy and entertaining accessories and apparel, including T-shirts, accessories, jewelry, drinkware and more. Founded in 1947 as a mail order catalog in Pennsylvania, the company opened its first brick-and-mortar store in 1963 and has since grown to more than 680 retail locations.
