Wichita’s second Chick N Max restaurant will open in the old Freebirds World Burrito spot at 2530 N. Greenwich on Monday — and restaurants three, four and five won’t be far behind.
The locally owned chain opened its first restaurant at 410 N. Hillside in January, and at the time, owners said that 2530 N. Greenwich and a restaurant at 21st and Amidon would quickly follow.
Now, they’re ready to announce two more: A new Chick N Max, complete with a patio and retractable garage doors on Wichita State University’s Innovation Campus and another in a new building that’s just gone up at 37th and Maize.
Business has been swift at the Hillside store, said Sarah Selmon, the vice president of marketing and communications for Chick N Max, which is owned by local entrepreneur Max Sheets.
“It’s going really well,” she said. “We’re pleasantly surprised. We’ve been doing a lot of to-go business.”
After the Monday opening at 21st and Greenwich, the next Chick N Max to open will likely be the one at 37th and Maize, Selmon said. It should be ready by July or August, and the WSU location should follow about a month after that.
The chain has faced a few obstacles at the 21st and Amidon location, which they’d originally hoped to have open by summer. It will probably be the last one finished, though, as the owners are negotiating with the landlord over adding a drive-up window for carryout customers. (The 37th and Maize store also will have a drive-up window.)
After that, Selmon said, Sheets will likely be ready to expand again.
“I think we’ll look south after that, then Salina and markets like that that aren’t chicken-saturated,” she said.
Chick N Max is a quick service restaurant that specializes in tenders, wings, sandwiches, fries, chicken and waffles and smoked chicken.
The new restaurant at 21st and Greenwich will be open the same hours as the original: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
